The Nicolet Impact 410 Infrared Spectrometer (IR)

was purchased in the 1996-1997 academic year. This

analytical tool uses infrared light to probe the

functional groups in molecules and is capable of

analyzing solid and liquid samples. Students in the

organic course use the IR to study cyclohexanone that

they prepared by oxidizing cyclohexanol. The IR

is also used by students in the spectroscopy course

and those involved in research to aid in the

identification of compounds.
